Rickshaw Run
"Round up a couple of mates and drive a 3-wheeled shit box with almost no safety features across the length and breadth of India!" - Rickshaw run
On the 9th of September, we will be partaking in the 'Rickshaw Run', a race in 'Tuk-Tuks' (glorified lawnmowers). The attempt is to cover 3500km from Gauteng (the Himalayas) to Kochi (South India). The ‘Rickshaw Run’ offers no set route, no backup, and no guarantee contestants will make it... The Rickshaws are shit uphill. They fall over easily. They break down, The suspension is rubbish. The rain floods in. Sounds fun right?
For us Aussie boys, we wanted to fundraise for a charity that is close to home and our hearts. We have landed on mates Fiji. We have collaborated with mates and decided on fundraising specifically for a boat for the community. This will be used by empower young men to create their own businesses and fish to provide for their families.
The community does not have a boat at the moment which is very limiting. With a boat they will be able to take tourists from neighbouring resorts out to do activities such as surf safaris, fishing and spear fishing. They will also be able to provide for their families by being able to fish.
In Fiji the communities are matrilineal (despite having a chief - which is a colonial structure not a traditional one). Often the women are encouraged to get an education, find work and make something of themselves - the same pressure we would expect of men in our culture. Whilst feminism in our culture has helped to equalise opportunities for men and women, in Fiji the men are more limited as to their job prospects and opportunities. This boat will be huge for them and so exciting to see what comes of it!
